Why use Zinc supplementation in treating diarrhea?
Zinc supplementation for the treatment of diarrhea has been shown to decrease the duration and severity of the diarrheal episode, diarrhea hospitalization rates and, in some studies, all-cause mortality. Not only that, the effect of zinc is found to have a preventive and long-lasting impact (prevent further occurrences in the ensuing 2 -3 months).
Zinc when used in the treatment of persistent diarrhea, reduces the probability of continuing diarrhea and the rate of treatment failure or death. Studies conducted during acute shigellosis (bloody diarrhea) showed that zinc therapy was associated with enhanced antigen-specific antibody responses. The use of zinc as an adjunct therapy, significantly improves the cost-effectiveness of the standard management of diarrhea for dysenteric as well as non-dysenteric illnesses. Zinc supplementation for diarrhea in addition to oral rehydration therapy, can reduce inappropriate antibiotic use that leads to resistant pathogens.
