Why is dietary fiber so important?
A healthy diet must include all nutritional constituents like proteins, fats, carbs, vitamins and minerals in proportionate amount. Well many a times you must have calculated your daily protein/carb intake but how often have you checked your fiber intake? Statistically speaking, the majority don’t. Fiber or roughage are those components of food which are not digested by the body. They enter our digestive tract, pass through all of it without getting broken down or digested, and are then excreted away. Fiber regulates your blood sugar levels. It helps to keep insulin in check and thereby reduces your cravings for unhealthy and quick calories.
The class of insoluble fibers(obtained mainly from cereals) prevents Type 2 diabetes. As already mentioned, it keeps your sugar levels stable and helps maintain a healthy weight, thereby reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes.
It is an indispensable constituent of a heart-friendly diet. Studies have found that consuming high fiber food significantly lowers the infamous LDL cholesterol. It also lowers blood pressure and reduces inflammation of the heart.
Though the direct effects have not been proved, but an increase in dietary fiber significantly lowers the risk of colon and breast cancers. It is because it naturally detoxifies the body and the food items rich in fiber are usually rich in antioxidants.
As evident from the above points, fiber helps in prevention of various diseases and is extremely necessary for proper functioning of the bowels. Do not forget to include substantial amount of fibres in your diet for better living.
