When is the best time to get pregnant?
Visit your doctor for a preconception consultation if you are thinking about pregnancy. They will extend you with skilled advice on planning your pregnancy.
The preconception span (3 months prior to pregnancy) is the time to make life changes that can help stimulate fertility, decrease problems during pregnancy and aid in recovery from birth.
If your partner and you are planning to have a baby, you should start taking folic acid before you get pregnant. Folic acid aids to give the best health outcomes for your baby when it is growing. Taking folic acid every day before and during pregnancy also prevents the development of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, in your baby.
Watching what you eat
You should watch your diet and see where you may be able to make healthier food choices. Eating more healthy foods will increase your chances of becoming pregnant and having a healthy pregnancy.
During pregnancy there is no safe amount of alcohol to drink; therefore, for women who are planning a pregnancy or pregnant, not drinking is the risk free option. Alcohol can affect the health and growth of an unborn baby for life.
The single most effectual means of protecting your baby and yourself from the occurrence of serious complications during pregnancy is Quitting smoking before pregnancy. By quitting smoking you are more likely to conceive without delay and naturally, less likely to suffer an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage and less likely to deliver your baby prematurely.
The best time to get pregnant
The possibility of conceiving is more if you have sex within a day or so of ovulation that is, releasing an egg from the ovary. This is usually about fourteen days after and before your next menstrual cycle, not the first day of your last menstrual cycle.
An egg lives for about twelve to twenty hours after it is released. The egg must be inseminated by a sperm within this period for a woman to get pregnant. If you want to conceive, having sex every couple of days will mean there is always sperm present in the fallopian tubes to meet the egg when it is released.
Sperm can live for up to 7 days inside a woman’s body. The sperm will have had time to travel up the fallopian tubes to ‘wait’ for the egg to be released, if you have had sex in the days prior to ovulation. It is tough to know precisely when ovulation happens, unless you are practicing fertility awareness or natural family planning.
The menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of a woman’s period that is from day one. She will ovulate, sometime after her period.
Ovulation occurs fourteen days before the first day of the next period (not after) and then around twelve-fourteen days after this she will have her next period. Shorter or longer cycles are normal, but the average cycle takes 28 days. So a woman with a twenty- eight day cycle will ovulate on day fourteen but a women with a thirty day cycle will ovulate day sixteen.
