When you hit the age between 45-55 there are a lot of changes going on in your body and it is nothing but menopause to blame on. Postmenopausal atrophic vaginitis, or vaginal atrophy too most commonly occurs after menopause. It is the thinning of the walls of the vagina caused by decreased estrogen levels.

Causes of vaginal atrophy

The major cause of A atrophic vaginitis is the decline in estrogen which can occur at other times besides menopause, including:

  • after removal of ovaries
  • during breastfeeding
  • post hormonal therapy (for breast cancer treatment)
  • post-chemotherapy (for cancer)
  • post pelvic radiation therapy (for cancer treatment)

Symptoms of vaginal atrophy

  • pain or burning with urination
  • shortening and tightening of the vaginal canal
  • pain during intercourse
  • vaginal dryness (lack of vaginal moisture)
  • vaginal burning due to inflammation
  • spotting after intercourse
  • discomfort during intercourse
  • thinning of the vaginal walls
  • more frequent urinary tract infections
  • urinary incontinence (involuntary leakage)

  • Switching to cotton underwear
  • Using Vitamin E oil as a lubricant
  • Using vitamin D for moisturizing the vagina.
