An infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, oral herpes causes painful sores in the mouth, tongue, lips, inner cheeks and roof of the mouth. This virus affects only humans and is contracted through skin contact, touching infected saliva and mucous membranes.

Stages of Oral herpes

  • The virus initially enters the skin or mucous membrane and begins to reproduce causing oral sores and symptoms like fever. In many cases there might be no sore or symptoms at all, called an asymptomatic infection.
  • The virus moves to nervous tissues in your spine from the infected site where they reproduce and then become inactive.
  • New sores and symptoms arise when the virus get reactive due to certain stresses.

Symptoms

  • Pain, burning and irritation at the site of infection
  • Cluster of blisters
  • Intensely painful oral sores that cause difficulty eating and drinking
  • Mild swelling, redness and bleeding of gums
  • Lymph nodes in the neck my swell up causing pain
  • In teens, Ulcers on the tonsil cause throat pain
  • Sores can affect anybody but are most common among infants of 1-2 years

Treatment

Based on the information you give and a physical examination, oral herpes is easily diagnosed. Based on the symptoms and your immunity levels, medication and pain relievers are prescribed. It is very important to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

In case of infants if sores appear and urine becomes visibly less, it is best to consult your doctor. The same goes with adults, the sores can become very painful making eating and drinking difficult which causes dehydration. So, consult a professional immediately for proper treatment.
