What is Keshan disease ?
A condition of congestive cardiomyopathy, Keshan is caused due to a combination of selenium deficiency and the presence of mutated strains of Coxsackie virus. The disease gets its name from the place Keshan County located in China where its symptoms were first diagnosed.
This disease is often fatal and most commonly affects children and women of childbearing age. Keshan results in heart failure and pulmonary endema due to lack of selenium in the system.
The best ways to prevent Keshan is to consume selenium-enriched foods which largely depends on the soil in the area. In cases of lack of selenium in the soil, taking supplements is best to meet the daily recommended amount.
