Epilepsy is a disorder of brain in which brain starts acting abnormally, causing seizures of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. It affects both men and women.
There are various factors which can cause Epilepsy:
- Genetic Influence
- Head trauma
- Brain conditions
- Infectious disease
- Prenatal injury
- Developmental disorders
Epilepsy symptoms depend on the type of seizures. Seizures are of two types, focal seizures, and generalized seizures. Epilepsy symptoms include:
- Temporary confusion
- A staring spell
- Loss of consciousness or awareness
- Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs
- Psychic symptoms such as fear and anxiety
The doctor may recommend several tests to diagnose epilepsy and the causes of seizures. It may include a neurological exam to test behavior, motor abilities, mental function and blood test to check for infections and genetic conditions. The doctor may also suggest:
- High-density EEG
- CT scan
It is generally treated by medications. If medications don’t treat the condition then the doctor may suggest surgery or any other treatment. Surgery is performed when test show that the seizures originate in a small, well-defined area of your brain.
