What is Dysgraphia?

It is described as a condition that causes trouble with written expression. The term Dysgraphia comes from the Greek words “days” meaning “impaired” and “graphic” meaning “letterforms by hand”. It is a condition which is related to the brain.

Causes

In a person with dysgraphia, experts believe that the steps included in the writing process go off the track. The steps are:

  • Organizing information that is stored in memory
  • Getting words onto paper by handwriting or typing them

Symptoms

There are six categories of symptoms of dysgraphia:

Visual-Spatial Difficulties

  • The trouble with shape-discrimination and letter spacing
  • Trouble organizing words on the page from left to right
  • Copies text slowly
  • Trouble reading maps, drawing or reproducing a shape

Fine Motor Difficulties

  • Person may faces trouble in holding a pencil correctly, tracing, cutting food, tying shoes, doing puzzles, texting, and keyboarding.
  • Unable to use scissors
  • Holds his wrist, arm, body in an awkward position.

Language Processing Issues

  • Trouble getting ideas down on paper quickly
  • Trouble understanding the rule of games
  • Has a hard time following directions
  • Loses his train of thought

Spelling Issues/Handwritten Issues

  • Has a hard time understanding spelling rules
  • Has trouble telling if a word is misspelled
  • Blends printing and cursive
  • Avoids writing
  • Erase a lot

Diagnosed

It is typically identified by licensed psychologists who specialize in learning disabilities. They will give your child academic assessments and write tests to measure fine motor skills and written expression production.

Treatment

Individualized Education Program is developed for the people with Dysgraphia. This may include intensive instruction in handwriting as well as personalized accommodations and modifications.
