WHAT IS DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE?
Deep tissue massage is a technique that primarily focuses on the deepest layers of muscle tissue such as fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints) and tendons, using firm pressure and slow strokes.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Some of the strokes used in deep tissue massage feel similar to those used in Swedish massage therapy. Deep tissue massage is used to break up scar tissue; physically breaking down “knots” that form in the muscles or adhesions (rigid tissue) that collectively disrupt circulation, causing pain, inflammation and limiting motion.
The therapy generally involves the use of fingertips, hands, knuckles, elbows and forearms by the massage therapist. You are expected to breathe deeply while the therapist works on the tense areas. There could be some soreness or stiffness experienced post the massage that usually goes away in a day or two. Drinking water after the massage will help flush the metabolic waste from the tissues.
WILL IT HURT?
There could be some pain that accompanies the massage, causing discomfort as the massage therapist works on areas where there are adhesions or scar tissue.
In case of any severe pain, inform your therapist right away as they can adjust the techniques.
