What is Cholangiocarcinoma?
A rare case of cancer, cholangiocarcinoma is a condition where malignant growth occurs in one of the bile ducts between the liver and small intestine. It starts somewhere on the bile duct and blocks the secretion of bile.
- Pain in upper right abdomen
- Weight loss
- Clay-coloured stool
- Impaired liver functioning causes variations in bilirubin and alkaline phosphate levels
The procedure depends on the size and location of the tumour and progress of cancer. In some cases it is possible to remove the tumor through surgery while in some other cases the entire liver might need to be removed and a transplant would be necessary. In many cases, the cancer would have spread to other parts of the body so surgery will not suffice and chemotherapy or radiation will be required.
