What is Cervical Polyps?- Dr. Archana Pathak Motherhood Sarjapur Road.
The cervix is the passage between your uterus and vagina. Cervical polyps is a growth of red finger-shaped structures in the cervix. Although the cause behind it is not entirely understood, there are a few possible reasons for their cause:
- Chronic inflammation
- A reaction to increased estrogen levels
- Blood vessel congestion in cervical canal
- Hormonal imbalance
Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom. This happens:
- Between periods
- After menopause
- After intercourse
- After a vaginal wash
- Sometimes it can get infected causing white or yellow vaginal discharge
Diagnosis and treatment
During a pelvic exam a polyp is easily diagnosed and these are usually non-cancerous. The treatment is fairly simple as the polyp is removed from the base. The polyp is gently twisted by tying it at the base or removed using a special forceps. A solution is applied during this procedure to stop bleeding. A polyp is only removed if it is too big, bleeds or is unusual in appearance.
