The skin is an integral part of your overall look and appeal. There are many treatments like facial, which are done to maintain a youthful look and to reduce the effects of ageing. However, most of such treatments focus only on the face of the individual and do not take into account the rest of the body. What if you need to rejuvenate the skin of your entire body? The solution is body polishing, which is a great way to rejuvenate the skin of the entire body.

What is body polishing?

Body polishing is a process that exfoliates and hydrates the skin, making it soft and smooth. Simply put, it is facial for the entire body. Many people tend to confuse it with a massage, but it is quite different as compared to a massage. A body polish is done on the skin, while a massage focuses on the muscles of the body. It can also be done at home; however, most people prefer to get it done by a professional at a spa.

In body polishing, a scrub material is usually mixed with essential oils before applying it on the body. The abrasive scrub is then washed off the body, and then a lotion or cream is applied on the body.

Why is it done?

Body polishing has many benefits for your skin, including:

  • unclogging pores to prepare for a body treatment

  • moisturising and hydrating dry skin

  • exfoliating the skin surface to remove dead skin cells

  • improving blood flow with an invigorating exfoliation

  • promoting cell regeneration to encourage healthy skin

What Ingredients To Look For In a Good Skin Polish?

For those who desire a unique skin appearance and that natural glow, here is a list of all the ingredients you should expect to be included in a good body polish:

  • Sugar

  • Salt

  • Rice bran

  • Coffee grounds

In extension to the first list of base ingredients, this second list will let your skin enjoy more advantages:

  • Olive oil

  • Coconut oil

  • Lavender oils

  • Citrus oils

  • Shea butter

  • Walnut shells

  • Apricot shells

  • Loofah or pumice stone

Benefits of body polishing

There are various benefits of body polishing like:

  • The most crucial benefit of body polish is that it exfoliates the dead skin cells, giving the skin a youthful appearance.

  • It softens and smoothens the skin.

  • A body polish moisturises and hydrates the skin.

  • Removes clogged dirt and oil from the skin.

  • Body polish also stimulates the production of new skin cells and improves blood circulation, giving the skin a more youthful glow.

  • Body polishing also has therapeutic value as it reduces stress and relaxes the body.

  • Body polishing prepares the skin for other treatments like tanning etc.

How to do it at home?

  1. Take a warm shower to get the skin prepped. You could stay in a warm shower or bathtub for around 20 minutes.

  2. Firstly, after taking a bath, make sure to moisturize the skin. Use coconut oil or any other good essential oils to lubricate your skin.

  3. Apply the body polish to your body and make circular motions with your oil-covered hand to successfully perform this process. Use a little force while you apply your skin polish to remove dead skin cells.

  4. Rub your skin with the pumice stone to work on tough areas. Move the stone gently on this area to make it smooth.

  5. You need to may more attention to the areas you work with pumice stone with. Apply more body polish in those areas than the others.

  6. Rinse the skin polish off.

  7. After rinsing off the body polish, use a soft towel to lightly dry the skin.

  8. Use a regular body moisturiser on the dry skin.

How is it different from a body scrub?

Form the below; you will realise that body scrub is more of an exfoliating method, while body polish is a treatment intended to enrich and enhance the skin.

Body Polish: In body polish, a number of ingredients including sugar, salt, rice bran and coffee grounds, will be combined with oil and applied to your body. You can get body polishing alone, or you could arrange it with a message – as per your preference.

Body Scrub: While using a body scrub, the skin is to be exfoliated. It can be done using an abrasive product, that is massaged or rubbed on the skin. This process will help get rid of dead skin cells, remove hard and flaky skin. Also, the skin would ultimately feel fresh, soft and alive. In case you want to use oils in exfoliating, it is generally after using the scrub.

Is body polishing a remedy for skin whitening?

A body polish is one’s self-spa treatment. It can be done every day, twice in a week or once a month, as per your preference and skin-type. Although it is not an instant solution for skin whitening, a body polish acts as a cleanser, removing oil and dirt from your skin. You can bid goodbye to the accumulated tan on your skin by exfoliating using body polish. Once your skin is free from tan, you’d naturally look a tone fairer than before! And not only it helps get rid of your tan but also closes your oily pores, making your skin radiant and supple, and your skin tone even better.

  • It’s important to not overdo body polishing. Using a body polish too often can over-exfoliate your skin, leading to irritation and redness.

  • You should skip polishing or exfoliation if you have open sores, cuts, or sunburns. You can resume your usual schedule once your skin has healed.

  • You should avoid soaps and strong cosmetics for a day or two after the polishing.

  • To maximize the benefits of body polishing, do exfoliation after some days.
