What is an ACL tear?
One of the most important ligaments in the knee is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). An ACL tear is a common sports injury as it usually occurs while playing a sport. While playing games like football, basketball, tennis etc. when there is sudden change in direction or jumps and stops, this injury may occur.
People who has an ACL tear usually hear or feel a pop in the knee. The knee begins to swell up and the person experiences severe pain which causes inability to function and continue the activity. The tear results in a loss of their range of motion and a feeling of instability develops as the knee cannot bear the weight.
- Incorrect landing after a jump
- Sudden stops and turns
- Direct blow on the knee during activities like tackling
Prevention and treatment
Studies have suggested that women are more likely to suffer from an ACL tear than men because a general observation shows than women are more likely to land awkwardly on their knee which increases the stress. Also, women has comparatively weaker hamstrings which affects the ACL as it could overextend.
Professional training and exercise to strengthen the muscles and improve landing techniques helps reduce the risk of ACL tears. People who have had ACL injuries are at a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis in the knees. Wearing appropriate footwear, padding and sports gear can help prevent injuries.
