What are Dry Eyes?
Dry eye syndrome is a condition which is caused by lack of tear production. If enough tears aren’t produced, the layer that coats your eyes is missing which makes is difficult to eliminate dust and other particles.
The symptoms are evident and it is best you see your doctor right away if you experience rising discomfort. Common symptoms include:
Extensive reading, long hours on the computer or in a dry environment further aggravates this condition.
Causes and treatment
There are some common factors that have an effect on the eyes:
- Exposure to excess dry air and heaters
- LASIK surgery
- Contact lenses
- Medications like birth control and antidepressants
If you experience the symptoms and suddenly feel like you have difficulty in seeing clearly, visit your ophthalmologist immediately. After examining your eye and determining the underlying cause, they suggest treatment options.
The most common solution is eye drops to increase the moisture content of the eye. In some cases lacrimal plugs are used to block the drainage holes in the eyes so that tears retain for longer. Anti-inflammatory medications increase production of tears and well balanced diet with required proteins and vitamins helps keep the eyes healthy. In extreme cases the drainage holes are permanently plugged surgically.
Dry eyes are more prone to bacterial infections, inflammation and scarring of cornea so it is important that you visit a specialist and get yourself treated if you have the condition.
