WAYS TO PREVENT A HANGOVER
Drinking alcohol has its own pros and cons but having a hangover after a drinking session is one of the most unpleasant experiences that includes – headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness and loss of appetite.
Let’s look at some ways to prevent hangovers or reduce them significantly.
- DRINK IN MODERATION
The severity of getting a hangover increases with the amount of alcohol consumed so the best way to prevent hangover is to drink in moderation. The amount of alcohol required to produce a hangover varies from individual to individual so it is important to know your limit.
- DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
Alcohol contributes to dehydration as it is diuretic and makes you urinate more often. Although dehydration does not cause a hangover, it is important to remain hydrated to avoid symptoms of thirst, headache, fatigue and dry mouth. Drinking water will keep the pounding headache at bay, which comes along with a hangover.
- DON’T SMOKE
Smoking significantly along with drinking can severely increase the chances of a hangover so it’s better to avoid mixing smoking and drinking.
- EAT WELL
Drinking alcohol on an empty stomach will allow the drink to be absorbed faster so it is advisable to get a full meal with healthy carbs. Eating well before and during drinking helps keep the alcohol content at a lower level.
- GET ENOUGH SLEEP
Hangovers come with fatigue and irritability so it is important to get a good sleep post drinking to allow your body to recover.
- CONSUME EGGS
Order a poached egg or an omelette while you are drinking. Eggs contain cysteine that help break down a headache causing toxin, which is produced when your body digests alcohol. However, go easy on the eggs as you do not want an upset stomach.
- SKIP CHAMPAGNE
The bubbles in the champagne may quicken the absorption of alcohol so you get drunk faster and are likely to get a bad hangover.
- DRINK CLEAR LIQOUR
Drinks such as vodka and gin contain fewer impurities and toxins compared to the dark ones like whiskey and rum. Also, drinking high end drinks, though expensive may make your hangover less severe because they are filtered to remove impurities and toxins.
The best way to avoid a hangover is to stay clear of booze completely but if you cannot avoid alcohol, it is advisable to drink in moderation and consume good quality alcohol.
