Overview

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the world's fatal diseases. Each day, almost 4,000 people lose their lives to TB, and nearly 28,000 people fall sick with this preventable and curable disease. But during the COVID-19 outbreak, global consideration of TB has waned.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the combined responses to it has caused a disturbance of TB prevention and treatment services worldwide, threatening to hinder the progress that has been made to date.

TB remains one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases.

  • Dr Zelalem Temesgen says, "COVID-19 has absolutely been in the spotlight over the last year as a catastrophic infectious killer, but that doesn't mean we can take our focus off of other infectious conditions like tuberculosis. Alternatively, it has also drawn attention, perhaps as has never been done before, to the value of public health."
  • Dr Stacey Rizza, a Mayo Clinic infectious conditions expert and executive medical director for Mayo Clinic International, tells TB is a dangerous public health crisis that understands no borders. She says there are still so many people infected by this disease (almost 25 percent of the world's population).
  • The theme of World TB Day 2021 - 'The Clock is Ticking' –expresses the sense that the world is running out of time to serve on the commitments to eliminate TB made by global leaders.
  • This is particularly crucial in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that has placed End TB progress at risk and to assure equitable access to prevention and care in line with WHO's drive towards accomplishing Universal Health Coverage.
