What are Gum Diseases?

Gum disease is an inflammation of the tissues that can damage the bone that supports and surrounds your teeth. It is a prevalent cause of tooth loss in adults because it does not have any painful symptoms. The gum disease has three stages from least to most severe. They are gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. They are generally caused by the formation of plaque (a sticky layer of bacteria) on your teeth.

Symptoms of Gum Diseases

The early signs and symptoms of gum disease include,

•Bad breath

•Pus at the gum line

•Bleeding gums

•Swollen and red gums

•Gaps between the teeth

•Tooth mobility

•Changes in the fit of a denture

•Exposed roots

•Pockets between the tooth surfaces and gums

What is Gum Flap Surgery?

Gum Flap Surgery is a procedure used to address the effects of gum disease and improve the health of your smile. If not appropriately treated, periodontal disease can cause you severe damage to your teeth and the surrounding structures. This can also lead to tooth loss. Hence, flap surgery is a quick procedure to stop the progression of gum disease. Gum flap surgery consists of two significant steps: incising the gums and pulling off the tissue from the teeth to perform the treatment (in roots and jawbone).

Who is eligible for the treatment?

The Flap Surgery treatment is recommended for the patients who have moderate to severe gum disease, or periodontitis that cannot be treated by using non-surgical methods such as root planing and scaling. The procedure aims to remove the built-up plaque and tartar around the roots and improves the health of gum tissue. If you are suffering from a severe sum disease, an additional step can be performed to treat the tissues of the bone that are affected by the gum disease.

The Flap Surgery Procedure

The treatment uses a highly sophisticated and meticulous technique to regenerate, reconstitute, and reconstruct destroyed and lost tissues. In the first step, your doctor will clean and remove the built-up plaque and tartar from your teeth which is done under local anesthesia. Once the area is numbed that needs treatment, a small incision is made to create a little flap of gum tissue through which the affected areas can be accessed.

In the second step, the doctor will remove the inflamed gum tissue and clean the tooth roots. If required, the affected area may be treated by using antibiotics and other medications. It also repair the defected bone with grafting material and regenerate the periodontal ligament by chemical (growth factors) and physical (barrier membranes) procedures. Finally, the doctor will replace the gum tissue and close all incisions using sutures.

Post-Treatment Guidelines

After the treatment, you may experience some discomfort like swelling and bleeding. The chances of developing an infection are also high. Depending on your requirements, doctors may give you some pain medication. It is necessary to rest after the treatment.

For the first 24 hours, do not involve in any strenuous activity and use only warm salt water to rinse your mouth. It will also help in reducing swelling and relieving pain. Moreover, eat fresh, soft foods, avoid smoking, and brush your teeth gently.
