The importance of oral hygiene should not be overlooked at all. It is vital for proper functioning of teeth and to avoid decay, infections, and diseases. Oral care may become a bit complicated especially if you have had some orthodontic treatment like dental braces and you may need to take extra care.

The need for extra care:

It may be hard to clean the crowded part of your teeth while wearing braces. Many times it may be difficult and almost impossible for the toothbrush to reach parts of your braces and teeth.

Also if you are wearing braces, normal flossing may become an issue as it may get stuck with the braces.

And you need to understand that wearing braces will help realign your teeth and may help fixing other problems, but it does not take care of hygiene of teeth by itself. And therefore, proper brushing and flossing are even more important while wearing braces to help prevent formation of plaque, or staining.

Cost of neglect:

As already stated, poor dental hygiene can lead to tooth decay, and various infections and diseases. Small particles of food which get trapped after eating are also hard to remove if you have braces and if these remain stuck for longer periods of time, it will erode the enamel, and also lead to plaque and tartar formation.

Neglecting proper hygiene can also reveal stained part of the teeth when you have braces removed and may extend your treatment.

Although a bit more difficult, it is not totally impossible to clean your teeth properly while wearing braces. Use a soft toothbrush while brushing and try to observe if there are any areas left untouched or unreachable. Clean these areas with extra effort.

You can also you water flossers to floss. A thread may get stuck time and again and hence water flossers are a good choice. Floss threaders can also help.

Other oral hygiene tips related to food choices and importance of healthy diet should also be followed.
