I have a terrible fear of going to the dentist. What should I do?
Have you ever heard about Dental Anxiety and Phobia? Yes, they are all real and normal. Most people feel this way about dental appointments therefore, they'll do just about anything to avoid it. This feeling of nervousness, fear or anxiety can be triggered by certain events like pain or past experiences.
For those with dental phobia, here are 6 ways to overcome any apprehensions you may have about going to the dentist.
1.Find the Right Dentist
The foremost thing to do in overcoming your dental fears is choosing the right dental center and the dentist to consult with.
- Ask family and friends for recommendations and their past experience so that you are aware of what you are getting yourself into. A “heads-up” is always better.
- Consult with dentists who specialize in treating anxious or fearful patients.
- Look for a dentist that listens to you without judging and cares enough to figure out how to overcome your fear of dental procedures.
2.Be Open About Your Phobia
Most of the dentists are specialized in treating patients with fear and anxiety therefore when you schedule the appointment mention it to them and ask if you can meet with the dentist just to talk before any procedures.
3.Get A Companion
Getting someone along with you who you can trust and who doesn’t have the fear of dental procedures, calm you down.
4.Try Sedatives If Appropriate
Sedation can keep a patient calm and relaxed during treatment. So if appropriate then with the doctor’s consult, opt for one.
Few sedatives include:
- local anaesthesia
- nitrous oxide
- oral or IV sedation
Try relaxation exercises like controlled breathing to calm yourself during treatment. It involves taking a big breath and letting it out very slowly. This will relax your muscle and slow your heartbeat.
Distract yourself with something that will divert your mind during the treatment.
Here is what you can do:
- Listen to music
- Try counting backward
- Fiddle with a stress ball
- Watch funny videos
