Ama is the Sanskrit word for the half-digested un-metabolized food that circulates in the human body. In simple term they are the toxins in our body and ama is just an Ayurvedic term.  Literally, Ama means undigested or uncooked.

Ayurveda describes ama as the underlying cause of many health problems, therefore, getting rid of it or eliminating/lowering it can have a positive effect on our health. Here is how we can do it.

Five Steps to Lowering Ama

1. Step 1

Start with Nidan Parivarjanan — reduce the causes of ama.

Given below are the main causes of ama.

  • Cold meals.
  • Consuming large meals at night.
  • Stale food.
  • Packaged foods.
  • Overindulging yourself with food.
  • Not eating on time.
  • Eating when emotionally upset.

2. Step 2

The next step is known as Ama Pachan. Which means digesting the ama by using the digestive substances.

This can be achieved by:

  • Sipping hot water
  • Consuming specific spices or herbs.

3. Step 3

Lekhan, or cleansing of the digestive tract.

This can be achieved by:

  • Sipping hot water
  • Consuming specific spices or herbs.

4. Step 4

Agni Dipan, this step is for increasing the digestive fire.

This can be achieved by:

  • Following strict food regimen.
  • Starting liquid meals, progressing gradually to semi-liquid meals, then to thick soups and gradually to more solid food over a period of time.

5. Step 5

Finally Shodhan, which is the elimination of ama.

This can be achieved by:

  • Consuming specific ayurvedic herbal formula.
  • Panchakarma is a specific supervised in-house cleansing program.
