How To Help Kids Suffering From Learning Disorders?
Learning disabilities can really hamper your child’s overall growth and may create a barrier impossible to remove if not treated early. Not all children are born same, and if your child struggles at school in some particular subjects, or finds it hard to convey or learn specific things, he or she might be suffering from learning disabilities. And instead of forcing the child to improve, the issue must be dealt with in a gentler manner. How do you know if your child has learning disabilities or not? Here are some of the most common types of it:
Dyslexia: if your child has problems in reading, writing, spelling, or speaking, it may be a case of dyslexia.
Dyscalculia: as the name suggests, children suffering from this have difficulty with math and related concepts of time and money.
Dysgraphia: it is characterized by problems in writing, or organizing ideas, and spelling.
Dyspraxia: also known as sensory integration disorder, it reflects in the form of difficulty in motor skills. If your child suffers from hand-eye coordination, or balance, dyspraxia might be the case.
Aphasia: it is the difficulty with language when the child finds it hard to comprehend what is being said or written .
Auditory processing disorder: it is the inability to hear differences between sounds. This can cause problems in comprehending and listening.
Visual processing disorder: problems in interpreting diagrams, flowcharts, symbols etc.
Besides the above mentioned learning disorders, ADHD or autism can also cause learning disabilities and are hard to diagnose at an early stage.
Occupational therapy for learning disabilities:
Occupational therapy is a therapeutic and rehabilitative practice which may help overcome the learning disabilities. Occupational therapists are skilled in identifying the learning disabilities and treating the same. They help in identifying the disabilities at an early stage and prevent it from developing or causing complications. It is of great help as proper care is taken to prevent the disability from interfering in social and emotional aspects of daily life.
The therapist first evaluates thoroughly to understand the disability. Input is taken not just from the child, but also from friends and family to identify behavioral patterns and to determine the underlying cause. The therapist then suggests ways to overcome it or minimize it and gives guidelines according to which the child should be taken care of. Occupational therapy is a great way to overcome learning disabilities and associated inhibitions.
