Dandruff is one of the most common hair problems faced worldwide. It is a condition that causes flaking of the scalp and is usually accompanied by itching.
What causes dandruff?
Although the main cause is unknown, there are a few possible factors that affect the skin which causes flaking. Skin cells are continuously being formed so it is normal for dead cells to shed but, dandruff is the condition when this process is faster than normal.
- Oily scalp
- Dry skin
- Skin conditions like psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis
- Sensitivity to hair products
- Hormonal imbalance
- Immunity problems
These are some of the factors that can cause dandruff. Diagnosing if you have dandruff is easy as you can see white flakes on the head and scalp along with dryness and itchiness.
How is dandruff treated?
Although it is a chronic issue, dandruff can be treated to reduce the flaking. Begin by washing your hair daily with a mild shampoo. Massage the scalp will and then rinse properly. This removes the dead skin cell flakes and reduces oiliness of the scalp preventing the white flakes from building up.
If this isn’t helping, switch to anti-dandruff shampoos that are made specifically to target the problem and contain the required ingredients. After two weeks if these methods are not helpful, it is best to see a doctor. After understanding the root cause, the doctor may prescribe a medicated shampoo or some steroid lotion for the scalp.
Dandruff can be avoided by regular washing and brushing of hair. Avoid regular use of any kind of hair products as they cause significant damage and bring down stress levels as they have an impact. A healthy diet can keep dandruff away and promotes healthy hair growth.
It is best to consult an expert to reduce the issue in the beginning to avoid hair fall and increased flaking.
