How to get rid of Blood Blisters?
Blood blisters occur when the blood vessels under the skin’s surface get damaged. The blisters appear as red, fluid-filled and tend to be very painful. They are mainly caused by skin trauma such as forceful pinching or similar injury and typically occur on the hands and feet. Never pop the blood blister as it can cause infection and delay healing. The presence of a blood in a blister indicates there is a high-pressure component. High pressure causes injury to small blood vessels in the dermis.
Initially, it looks red in color but when it dries and coagulates over time, it goes a purple or black. It can take a month or more for that discoloration to disappears.
They should be left alone so they can heal. They usually heal after one or two weeks. They heal as the new skin forms. If blisters hurt, apply ice wrapped in a towel to it. Do not lance the blood blister, which is sometimes recommended for friction blisters without blood. The raised skin protects you from bacteria entering the blister.
Home remedies for Blood Blisters
Ice: Apply an ice wrap, the cold temperature will make your blood vessels constrict, which will reduce swelling and stop the internal bleeding. Apply ice on blister for about 10 minutes. Do not apply ice directly on the skin as it may cause an ice burn.
Witch Hazel: It contains astringent tannins that reduce pain and also help dry out blisters very quickly. It will also reduce inflammation. Dab a small amount of witch hazel extract on the blood blister and allow it to dry.
Cucumber: It contains silica which strengthens the connective tissues in the skin. Cut a chilled cucumber into thick slices and put a slice over the blister for a few minutes. Repeat this until blister is gone.
Aloe Vera: It has anti-inflammatory properties that can be helpful in treating blood blisters at home. Apply it gently on the blister and allow it to dry on its own.
Turmeric: It is best known for its medicinal properties and is often used to treat skin problems such as minor burns, suntans, and blisters. Mix one teaspoon turmeric with rose water or honey and apply this paste on the blister.
