How Does Yoga Aid in Slip Disc Recovery?
After being diagnosed with slipped disc, people often assume that their chances of a recovery from all the discomfort and pain are very slim. Under the guidance of a certified yoga therapist, practicing certain aasans can help ease pain and strengthen the spine.
Slip disc asanas are simple and more effective. Yoga teaches you posture correction, stretching and breathing. The aasans help in strengthening the muscles that hold your spine together and with regular practice, the bulge in your spine can reduce which helps in reducing the pain.
- Makara aasana
To practice this posture, lie on your chest with your head on the floor. Now, place you elbows on the ground, raise your head and let it rest on your palms. Make sure your legs are straight and relaxed. Hold in this position for about 5 minutes, then roll over and rest on your back.
- Jyestika aasana
A very relaxing pose tat rests not just your entire body but calms your mind as well. Lie on your chest with your legs stretched and forehead resting on the floor. Now, interlock your fingers and place your hands behind your ears, between your lower head and upper neck.
- Adva aasana
Another posture that is relaxing for slipped disk condition, this one also requires you to lie flat on your stomach with legs stretched. Now slowly stretch your hands forward and place them on the floor such that they are touching the head on both sides.
- Bhujanga aasana
This one works especially on your lower back, strengthens the spine and increases its flexibility. Lie on your stomach with your hands on both sides. Rest your palms on the floor with hands at shoulder level. Now, gradually raise your head and trunk with the support of your palms. Stretch your neck such that it arches backward slightly similar to that of a cobra hood. For beginners, it is advisable that they hold the position only for a couple of seconds and increase the time as the training progresses.
