HOW DOES PSYCHOTHERAPY WORK?

Psychotherapy is a treatment used to help overcome mental, psychiatric and emotional challenges or disorders. It is a talk therapy where every session aims at helping the patient overcome their depression or addiction by understanding their feelings and giving them the support or methods to help them cope with their situations in a more positive way.
This form of therapy when combined with prescribed medication works with bipolar and schizophrenia patients as well. Patients who put in genuine effort and have a willingness to adapt and makes changes often see positive results over a couple of months.
What happens during sessions?
The idea is to make the person understand that they have someone they can share everything without being judged but instead they will understand their situation and help them move forward. This trusting relationship ensures the patient benefits from the sessions and finds self-confidence and better solutions to their problems.
A patient might be suffering from PTSD, depression or emotional downs due to an incident in the past, a particular situation or certain failures. The therapists unearth the root cause and slowly help change perception to see things in new light. The sessions help drive away depressive and suicidal thoughts and boost their confidence and positivity by helping them understand themselves better.
How does therapy approach the issue?
Psychotherapy has different ways of approaching the situation based on what the problem and the reason behind it are:
- Behavioural therapy: Relieves emotional distress and increases positive outlook to make patients understand how changes in their behaviour can change their life for the better.
- Cognitive therapy: Focuses on changing one’s thought process and removing inappropriate thoughts.
- Interpersonal therapy: To approach issues that develop due to the patient’s relationship with close ones and the cause could be neglect or other relationship issues.
- Group therapy: Instead of one on one sessions, a group of 6-12 people with similar issues come together and share their issues. With the help of the therapist, they find relevant solutions and share how each one is overcoming the problem. This happens in the case of alcohol addiction and drug abuse.
