Ayurveda is one of the oldest form of natural medicine that believes in bodily and mental well-being. It not only helps treat common body ailments but is also effective in managing general mental conditions.

Stress and tension are the most common forms of ailments that trouble our mind in today’s life. According to Ayurveda, the mind has three states or "gunas" - "sattva" (knowledge, purity), "rajas" (action, passion) and "tamas" (inertia, ignorance). Stress occurs when sattva decreases and rajas and tamas increase.

Let’s look at how Ayurveda can help provide relief from stress, anxiety and other mental ailments.

Most Ayurvedic herbs have the power to ward off stress. Some of the herbs that help you with stress are:

  • Brahmi
  • Bhringraj
  • Jatamasi
  • Ashwagandha
  • Vacha

These herbs can reduce stress, decrease the level of cortisol, relax your body, promote sleep and improve memory. In various ways like orally or local application these herbs can be used.

  • FOOD

Ayurveda considers food as an important medicine for the body and the mind and encourages the use of foods that promote “sattva” (purity and knowledge). Only fresh warm nicely cooked food with moderate spices and oils are the best foods to increase sattva. Ayurveda encourages satvik foods.

Known as “Panchakarma” in Ayurveda, these procedures are beneficial in managing mental and emotional functioning. Some of the treatments used in Panchakarma are oil massage (Abhyanga), Shirodhara (oil poured over the forehead) and basti (herbalized enemas). These purification therapies help remove toxins from the cellular level of the body, leading to enhanced mood and mental wellness.

Meditation calms our thoughts and offers relaxation by focusing on an object for a period of time. You can concentrate on an object, picture, sound or "mantra". Sit in a lotus position or a comfortable posture, settling into a state of pure consciousness and silence. Meditation allows for relaxed breathing, normalizes blood pressure, relaxes muscles and helps to reduce anxiety, stress and tension.

The problems of the mind are often more complex than they appear and require an all-round medical and therapeutical approach. Ayurveda and yoga support each other to bring the mind positivity back. Few times it needs more medical attention.
