Home Remedies for Grey Hair
Grey hair is one of the biggest concerns among people of all age groups today as even young adults are facing the issue of grey hair. Grey hair not only affects the look of the individual but can also make one underconfident as it makes one look older. Melanin is the substance that is responsible for the natural pigmentation of the hair and premature greying of hair is a sign of lack of melanin in the body as the body gradually stops producing melanin with age.
What causes premature greying of hair?
There are various factors which contribute to early greying of the hair. Of these, some factors like genetics are beyond one’s control, but there are various controllable factors that cause greying of the hair like:
Smoking and pollution
Lack of nutrition or eating an unhealthy diet
Excessive use of hair colorants and other chemical products
Certain diseases like thyroid disorders
How to tackle grey hair?
Trying to cover up the grey strands with hair color is not a permanent solution. In fact, it will only damage the hair further in the long run as it causes thinning, hair fall and split ends. However, there are certain steps you can take that will help you tackle this issue at the root:
Having a nutritious diet
Vitamin B12 and iron supplements
Amla(Indian Gooseberry): consuming the fruit or application of amla on the scalp can help a great deal. Applying a combination of amla with coconut oil, almond oil or lemon juice on the scalp regularly reduces grey hair and promotes healthy hair growth.
Curry leaves with coconut oil help in increasing hair pigmentation. To prepare this mixture, boil the leaves in coconut oil and strain the content. Massage this oil on the scalp twice a week for about an hour.
Henna powder (Mehendi) is the best natural hair colorant that works wonders not just by darkening the strands but also by strengthening and conditioning the hair. Henna powder can be directly applied as a ground paste or after boiling with oil or mixing with black coffee.
Coconut oil is an absolutely magical substance whose importance can never be overstated. It works wonders as it stimulates hair growth and moisturizes the hair. It is packed with antioxidants and can help reverse greying if used regularly for a long period.
Applying onion juice to the scalp can also help in reversing the greyness and treat thin hair. The sulfur present in onion juice nourishes the hair follicles and promotes healthy hair growth.
Tea is another substance that can be used as a natural colorant. Dip about 4-5 tea bags in boiling water and once the water is cooled, apply it to wetted hair and for long hours to see best results. A similar procedure can be tried with coffee for coloring grey strands.
Give these natural remedies a try for natural and damage free locks.
