Holiday blues - Depression among the elderly
Holidays are a great way to spend time with your friends and families. But you might have noticed in your elderly loved ones, that they show signs of depression when it’s holiday time. You might observe them feeling more stressed and sad. Don’t be surprised by it as it is relatively a common phenomenon among old people. So what causes it and how are they to be treated in such cases? Here it is:
Memories of earlier holidays. It is not the season itself but these memories of earlier holidays spent happily that causes it.
Loss of loved ones. They may have spent years celebrating holidays with their loved ones like parents, siblings or even spouse who may be no longer around. This too triggers depression during holiday seasons.
Changes in celebrations and traditions. It may not be possible in today’s times to celebrate the same rituals and traditions as was done years ago. This may make the elderly feel loss of connection and they may find it hard to digest the changes.
These factors combined with seasonal change can trigger serious symptoms of depression which may be very evident to you. Here are a few guidelines to help you through the same:
Spend time as much as you can. Nothing comforts them more than the time and attention you give to them.
Encourage and engage them in physical activities. Making them involved in activities will refrain them from revisiting old memories.
Present them with gifts and other collectibles which will make them delighted.
Visit family members and friends. Make trips to people you have not visited in a long time and take the elderly with you.
Do not forget to seek external help if needed.
Do not undermine the power of affection. Give them physical affection and care.
Do not be very decisive. Ask for their opinions before making even small decisions related to dinner or outing.
Las but not the least, do not ignore. Seasonal depression is real and it affects people worldwide and do not ignore it. Offer them all the help you can.
