GONORRHOEA: SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterial infection. The bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoea which affects certain parts of the body like urethra, vagina, anus and reproductive tract of females which are warm and moist areas. Being an STD, this infection spreads from one person to the other through unprotected anal, oral or vaginal sex.
Noticeable symptoms begin to develop after a week but in some cases they don’t show at all. The common symptoms among men:
- Painful sensation during urination

- Pus-like discharge from the penis
For women the symptoms are not very noticeable and can be hard to identify as the symptoms are similar to other infections:

- Burning sensation while urinating
- Lower abdomen pain
- Frequent urination
- Pain while engaging in intercourse
Treatment and prevention
If you experience these symptoms it is best to meet the doctor and get yourself diagnosed. The diagnosis is fairly simple as they take a sample of your discharge and it is tested in the lab. If you’re tested positive, gonorrhoea is usually treated with an antibiotic injection or a single oral dose.
The simplest way to prevent the STD is abstinence. Use a condom if you’re engaging in intercourse and it is best to stick to one partner. Alcohol and drug abuse are factors that promote you to do activities which could lead to an STD. Get yourself and your partner regularly tested and avoid engaging with someone who is suffering from the infection.
It is important to get yourself treated to prevent further complications. Women are at a great risk of complications as it can affect their reproductive tract and cause chronic pain while in men it can reduce fertility levels. It is very important to not engage in any form of activities that can transfer the bacterium as it spreads easily.
