Foods for Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a very common disease affecting a large number of people. It is a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. The thyroid hormone is responsible for growth, repair, and metabolism and lack of it may cause tiredness, obesity, unusual body temperatures etc. Here are a few foods to eat and avoid if you are suffering from hypothyroidism:
Foods to eat:
Eggs: Whole eggs are a rich source of iodine, selenium, and protein - all of which are necessary nutrients required for people suffering from hypothyroidism.
Fish: It is a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids which reduce the risk of various heart diseases. People with hypothyroidism are more prone to heart diseases and consuming fish reduces the risk of diseases related to inflammation.
Nuts: As already stated, people with low thyroid hormone require more amounts of selenium in their diet. Nuts are a rich source of selenium (especially hazelnut and brazil nut) and small quantities of it must be included in the diet.
Fresh fruits and vegetables: People suffering from hypothyroidism are often overweight and eating fresh fruits and vegetables will help in weight loss. Specific items like berries and sweet potatoes will also lower the risk of heart diseases. Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and broccoli should be consumed in moderate amounts though.
Seaweed: It has a high concentration of iodine, which is very beneficial.
Whole grains: Rice, quinoa, and flax seeds are a good choice as hypothyroidism often causes constipation. Eating gluten-free food items will also help reduce weight.
Dairy items: Dairy food items are rich in Vitamin D and iodine which are essential for thyroid production.
Foods to avoid:
Soy food items: This even includes tofu and foods rich in soy can increase the risk and intensity of hypothyroidism.
Highly processed food items like cookies etc should also be avoided.
Food items rich in gluten should be avoided at all costs.
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage should be consumed in moderation if unavoidable.
Fatty and fried food items should also be avoided.
