A product that took the world by storm and continues to take center stage thanks to the cause it works for, nicotine tablets have helped many quit smoking. Nicotine gums and patches are the most affordable and equally successful NRT products.

What is nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)?

These products basically help you quit smoking by providing you an amount of the daily dose of nicotine you receive from cigarettes. This helps by

  • Reducing withdrawal symptoms

  • Reducing cravings

  • Reducing/stopping cigarette smoking

How does it work?

It’s pretty simple, every time you feel the urge to smoke chew the gum. Once you start chewing, continue until you feel a tingling sensation in your mouth. When you feel this, stop chewing and park the gum between your teeth and cheek. Repeat this for about 30 minutes till the sensation begins to fade.

The nicotine is absorbed from the mouth and slowly releases into the body. 2mg and 4mg are the two types of gums available based on their strength.

  • If you smoke less than 20 cigarettes a day- 2mg

  • If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day- 4mg

The process of quitting is of course gradual. You begin with 4-12 cigarettes based on the dosage and your urge to smoke and over a period of 8-12 weeks you slowly cut down on the numbers.

It is important to remember that along with the gums and patches one must be strong-willed and if required combine NRT with other strategies that help you overcome the stress that makes you smoke suppress the urge with the help of friends, help groups etc. and get yourself to break free from the deadly habit.
