EARLY SIGNS OF LUPUS
In 2015, Selena Gomez announced that she had been diagnosed with Lupus and in September 2017, she revealed that she had a kidney transplant due to the disease.
What is Lupus?
Lupus is a chronic auto immune disease where your body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues and organs. Lupus causes inflammation that affects different parts of the body. Lupus could be hard to diagnose as the signs of the disease resemble other ailments.
The signs and symptoms vary from patient to patient. Some may experience mild symptoms while others have more severe symptoms.
Symptoms of Lupus
It is probably the most common symptom of lupus. Feeling tired occasionally is normal but any form of debilitating fatigue should be reported to the doctor.
A low grade fever that comes on and off for no reason is one of the early symptoms of lupus. This could be a result of inflammation or infection but if you have a recurrent fever, it is advisable to see a doctor.
In lupus, hair thins out slowly as a result of inflammation of the skin and scalp. Some people also have thinning of the beard, eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair. Hair grows back once lupus treatment has been carried out.
One of the most visible symptoms of lupus is a butterfly-shaped rash that appears on the nose and both cheeks. You can even experience non-itchy lesions in other parts of the body. Hives, sores, altered skin colour, sensitivity to sun are other characteristics of lupus.
Inflammation of the lungs is another possible symptom of lupus. This can even affect the diaphragm, leading to chest pain. Over time, some patients may even experience a shrink in the lung size.
People with lupus can develop kidney inflammation called nephritis. Nephritis usually begins within five years of lupus. If not controlled, nephritis can even lead to kidney failure.
Lupus causes pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints. Like other symptoms of lupus, joint problems can come and go. Joint pain and inflammation are common features of lupus. This joint pain is worse during the day but gradually improves in the evening.
Heart burn, gastrointestinal problems and acid reflux are some other occasional symptoms of lupus.
Autoimmune thyroid disease is another common ailment caused due to lupus. Thyroid is responsible for our body’s metabolism. A over active thyroid can cause hyperthyroidism while an under active thyroid leads to hypothyroidism.
