Tooth sensitivity is a condition that occurs when the tooth and root are exposed, creating a lot of pain; A condition that affects more than 50% of the population across the world.
The tooth and roots get exposed either due to thinning of the enamel or recession of the gums. When this occurs, the protection provided by them to the teeth and roots are taken away thus exposing them to hypersensitivity.
Why teeth get sensitive
Sensitivity occurs when the underlying dentin layer gets exposed. Dentin is the layer that immediately surrounds the nerves and this layer is covered by enamel and gums that surround the teeth.
When the enamel covering thins and gums recede over a period of time, the dentin gets exposed. The dentin layer contains a number of tubes and pores that are connected to the nerves and changes in temperature etc. affects the nerves as these pores get stimulated by changes due to exposure.
