Overview

Covaxin, also known as BBV152, is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by an Indian biotechnology company- Bharat Biotech and the Indian Council of Medical Research. It is a two-dose vaccine with an efficiency rate of 78%, as per the interim phase 3 clinical data.

It is a kind of whole-virus vaccine known as an inactivated vaccine. An inactivated vaccine includes a dead or modified version of the virus, in this case-SARS-CoV-2, which cannot duplicate and therefore cannot cause the infection. The virus is an inactivated vaccine that triggers an immune response and instructs the body to build antibodies, equipping it to shield itself against possible future infection by the virus itself.

Common side effects of Covaxin

As per the MoHFW(Indian government's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare), the Covaxin's main side effects involve:

  • fever

  • irritability

  • headaches

  • swelling, pain, or both at the injection site

These reactions/side effects overlap with the ones from currently available COVID-19 vaccines. They are presumed to last for a couple of days.

It has been stated via the vaccine's phase 1 and 2 clinical trials that other noted adverse effects involve fatigue, nausea, body aches, chills and vomiting. No serious side effects were reported.

Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen (Tylenol), has also been suggested by the Indian government's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to relieve some of these mild side effects and symptoms.

Allergies and other contraindications

A severe allergic reaction from Covaxin is very rare but likely to occur after a dose of Covaxin.

As per the vaccine fact sheet, a severe allergic reaction can lead to the following symptoms:

  • swelling of the throat and face

  • difficulty breathing

  • a rapid heartbeat

  • weakness

  • dizziness

  • rashes throughout the body

The vaccine has a contraindication for individuals with a history of allergies, even though the sheet does not define whether this is all-encompassing or refers only to individuals with allergies to the vaccine's elements.

The fact sheet also asks to be cautious about anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding or anyone with a bleeding disorder to receive the vaccine.

The MoHFW website also declares that Covaxin does not impair your fertility and that such allegations have no basis.
