COPPER POTS: A RESCUE TO DIARRHOEAGENIC BACTERIA
Contaminated or microbial unsafe water is still a major concern in most developing countries. In rural areas the water-purification methods are still out of reach. Ayurveda recommends the use of copper for storing drinking-water.
The antibacterial effect of copper pot against important diarrhoeagenic bacteria, including Vibrio cholerae O1, Shigella flexneri 2a, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, enteropathogenic E. coli, Salmonella enterica Typhi, and Salmonella Paratyphi is reported (Sudha, V. B. P., Ganesan, S., Pazhani, G. P., Ramamurthy, T., Nair, G. B., & Venkatasubramanian, P. (2012). Storing Drinking-water in Copper pots Kills Contaminating Diarrhoeagenic Bacteria. Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition, 30(1), 17–21).
Diarrhoea is the major cause of mortality and morbidity, especially in children of developing countries and claims two million lives each year.
In India, many states still have outbreaks of cholera. During 1996-2007, at least 222,038 individuals were affected by cholera.
Rotaviruses are the most common cause of diarrhoea in infants and children. In Asia, rotaviruses are responsible for 45% of hospitalizations for severe infantile diarrhoea.
Copper content (177±16 ppb) in water stored in copper pots was well within the permissible limits of the World Health Organization. Copper holds promise as a point-of-use solution for microbial purification of drinking-water, especially in developing countries (Sudha, V. B. P., Ganesan, S., Pazhani, G. P., Ramamurthy, T., Nair, G. B., & Venkatasubramanian, P. (2012). Storing Drinking-water in Copper pots Kills Contaminating Diarrhoeagenic Bacteria. Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition, 30(1), 17–21).
We can store water in copper pots for 16 hours, after that a slight change in pH occurs.
The copper ions do complete killing of bacteria by membrane damage. When water is stored in a copper vessel overnight or for eight hours, a very small amount of copper ions gets dissolved into the water and this process is called as Oligodynamic effect. It has the ability to destroy a wide range of harmful microbes, molds, fungi etc.
Ayurveda states that drinking water stored in a copper vessel has the ability to balance all the three doshas in our body Vata, Pitta and Kapha and also has many health benefits.
Drink the water stored in copper vessel in morning when you wake up. This will stimulate your bowel movements in the morning, keep your digestive system healthy and you will feel refreshed and light every day.
It prevents, water-borne diseases, aids in weight loss, slow down aging, good for heart, maintains haemoglobin level, regulates the working of the thyroid glands, and stimulates the brain, its anti- inflammatory and fight free radical.
Drinking water stored in the copper vessel once in the early morning and then in the evening is more than enough to get required amount of copper for our body.
No one should not drink this copper vessel water all year long. You can drink water stored in a copper vessel for three months continuously and then a take a break for one month. After a break you can continue drinking water again from a copper vessel for next three months. This gives our body time to remove any excess copper deposited in our body. The body has its own mechanism of eliminating the excess of anything.
