COMMON CAUSES OF A MISCARRIAGE
A Miscarriage or the loss of a foetus is an extremely devastating event for any parent. Most miscarriages occur in the first three months of pregnancy and are accompanied by bleeding, weakness, abdominal pain and severe cramps.
Let’s understand some of the common reasons behind a miscarriage.
- CHROMOSOMAL ABNORMALITY
Miscarriage occurs when there is a problem with the egg or sperms chromosomes during embryo function. Chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome are incompatible and could lead to miscarriage.
- THYROID DISORDERS
Be it hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, they are thyroid disorders that cause problems with fertility and can lead to recurrent miscarriages. A high level or low level of thyroid can both cause imbalance in the normal reproductive and gestational functions and hence lead to miscarriage.
Uncontrolled diabetes can cause a marriage. Therefore it is important that women with diabetes are constantly controlling their blood sugar and assess the extent of their diabetes.
Harmful day to day activities such as drug abuse, alcohol abuse, smoking, steroid use can all lead to a miscarriage early on and even later in the pregnancy.
- IMMUNOLOGICAL DISORDERS
In some cases the immune system views the embryo as a foreign object and attacks its own tissues that may lead to miscarriage.
- PHYSICAL COMPLICATIONS
Though not very common significant occurrences of miscarriage can occur due to uterine anomalies such as septum or polyps, cervical incompetency, etc.
- BLOOD CLOTTING DISORDERS
Miscarriages from blood clotting disorders may sound rare but they do occur. Genetic thrombophilia’s may play a significant role in causing recurrent pregnancy loss.
It is important to remember that not all miscarriages can be prevented. However it should be kept in mind that the anxious mother needs tender loving care from family and friends through this difficult phase. It is important to understand the reasons that led to a miscarriage so that the next time you take the necessary care so that you can have a healthy and happy baby.
