Generally, in a condition where there is an injury with a lesion or cut with bleeding, the blood normally clots in a few seconds. This process where the flow of the blood is blocked by clots by forming a plug at the sight of any cut or lesion is known as Coagulation. It a very important part of Hemostasis-that is stopping the loss of blood from the blood vessels that are damaged.
A lot of times there may be bleeding inside or outside the body which is abnormal. Some bleeding disorders may cause bleeding in very crucial organs like the brain or even under the skin.
Bleeding disorder causes: What are the causes of bleeding disorders?
Generally for the blood to clot, your body would need blood proteins called clotting factors and blood cells called platelets. A plug is formed by the platelets at the sight of the cut or the lesion from where there is bleeding or where the blood vessels are damaged. A fibrin clot is then formed by the clotting factors. This is how the fibrin clot prevents flow of the blood from the damaged vessels by keeping the platelets in place.
Therefore if there is a deficiency in the clotting factors or a disorder that affects the platelet production then there can be abnormal blood loss from injury, childbirth or any other conditions in which bleeding can occur.
There are 2 types of coagulation disorders.
Hemophilia : Normally the blood clots in a few seconds, but in Hemophilia which is a rare disorder the blood does not clot normally as it is deficient in blood clotting proteins also called the clotting factors. So in any case if you are suffering from Hemophilia then the blood will take a much longer time to clot than normal .Small injuries are not much of a worry but its of greater concern if there is any internal bleeding which may cause a severe damage to internal organs.
Hemophilia is disorder which may be genetic or sometimes inherited ,which does not have a definite cure as yet. But if one takes good care of himself and proper treatments, people who are suffering from Hemophilia can surely lead a normal and active life.
Thrombophilia: This a is a disorder in which the blood has an higher tendency to clot and these form unwanted blood clots inside the blood vessels, which can lead to deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
