Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

 Chronic fatigue syndrome is a relatively common disease that can last for a lifetime. As the name suggests, the most common symptoms are extreme tiredness, sleep abnormalities, pain, and other related symptoms which become worse on physical activity or exertion. This disease can affect anyone including children, but is more common in women in their 40s and 50s.


The exact causes for this disease are yet unknown, but researchers speculate the following causes for this disease:

Viral infections caused by viruses like EBV, RRV, or rubella.

A weakened immune system due to some disease or genetic factors can also cause CFS.

Hormonal imbalances.

Mental health problems like stress or depression.

The disease can also have genetic and hereditary factors and some people may genetically be more prone to it.


 CFS is very hard to diagnose as the symptoms are very common to that of other diseases and hence it is necessary to get yourself checked by a doctor if you have the following symptoms:

Extreme tiredness and fatigue.

Sleeping disorders.

Feeling dizzy or sick (flu like feeling).

Loss of memory and concentration.

Pain in more than one joints.

Frequent sore throat.

The feeling of tiredness multiplies after physical exercise or workout.


There is no cure for CFS and so the treatment is all about reducing the intensity of your symptoms. Though some people overcome it at some point of time, some others do not get rid of symptoms their entire life. Here are the treatments applied for CFS:

Therapies: Psychological counseling as well as physical therapies are prescribed to people suffering from CFS and may help overcome the symptoms.

Lifestyle changes: Avoiding caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol intake will help you improve the quality of sleep. It is also advisable to not to over exert yourself physically or emotionally.

Medications: Certain antidepressants are said to help people suffering from CFS. Other than that, yoga and acupuncture can also aid.
