Balayam is an alternative reflexology therapy that involves rubbing fingernails together by applying some amount of force. It is a type of acupressure therapy. It is also referred to as nail rubbing exercise.

The word is derived by joining two words; "Bal" (Hair) and "Vyayam" (Exercise). Balayam is a renowned asana for hair health. It was invented in India by ancient Rishi Munis who were doctors at that time.

According to them, it is a perfect cure for many hair ailments, it works without any particular medicine and lotion, and it works without disturbing the natural state of a complex body. It is one simple and natural technique for hair regrowth mentioned in ancient books and works of yoga.

Many people believe that this practice works and there are many balayam benefits, so before we start, let us give you an overview of Balayam Yoga.

This yoga exercise is an acupressure therapy in which a person rubs the fingernails of both hands against each other to stimulate hair growth and stop hair loss. If done frequently and appropriately, it can boost hair growth and fight hair problems.

There are few pressure points present in your body that are called acupressure points. If these points are adequately treated, it improves the flow of blood to the scalp, and as a result, leads to improved growth of hair. The roots of hair follicles are connected to the fingernails and give energy to the head, which is required for the growth of hair. This technique has its fair share of critics and followers. Let's understand the process to judge balayam yoga effectiveness.

The Science Behind Balayam

It is believed that there are certain nerve-endings below your fingernails which stimulates when you rub them together. If you do that, the brain sends a signal to the adult stem cells in the head to revive the unproductive or dead hair follicles. Thus, balayam is a useful exercise to prevent hair loss and supplement hair growth.

How does this Nail Rubbing Exercise help?

Balayam claims that practising it regularly reduces the bald spots and you can get your normal hairline back. Besides, it is argued that if you practice balayam, it prevents your hair from premature greying and hair loss.

The Procedure of Balayam Yoga

Below is the method of practising Balayam Yoga. If done properly, it gives useful results.

Rub your nails two to three times a day and continue the procedure for 5 to 10 minutes every time.

Fold your palms inwards in a gentle manner

Get your palms closer to each other and let the nails of both the hands touch each other

Rub fingernails of both the hands by making a swift movement for around 10 minutes.

Repeat this exercise two or three times every day.

When you rub the fingernails, make sure that you do not rub the thumbs. Also, keep in mind to do balayam on an empty stomach for useful results.

You must be wondering what happens when you do the procedure. Well, rubbing the nails of your hand will help in pumping the nutrition required by your scalp. Once your scalp gets the proper diet, it will increase the blood circulation that leads to hair growth.

Precautions to take while performing Balayam Nail Rubbing Exercise

It is important to remember that rubbing the tip of the fingernails against the nail surface of the other hand will increase the growth of hair on the ears. If you rub surfaces of only both thumbnails against each other, it leads to beard and moustache growth.

Balayam alone cannot bring about hair growth. Accompany this exercise with other self-care routines like washing your hair with shikakhai (Acacia concinna), reetha (Soapnut or Sapindus Mukorossi), and amla (India Gooseberry) daily. These three ingredients are proven best in the world for hair researched by some scientists.

Even if this exercise helps with controlling hair fall and bringing about hair growth, it still has to be accompanied by increasing the intake of proteins, vitamins and iron.

Balayam Exercise Results

Well, the effectiveness and the results of this therapy will ultimately depend on the nature of hair loss. However, with consistent balayam practice, hair loss may slow down in 3 to 6 months while hair growth will take up to 6 to 9 months.

What you must remember is that you should be doing this exercise regularly and make other lifestyle changes such as have a balanced diet, oil your hair, quit smoking, use hair masks and have a proper hair care routine for faster and better results.

However, if the hair loss is due to an underlying medical condition, it is better to consult a doctor and undergo treatment.

Balayam Yoga Benefits

Balayam is a nail rubbing exercise and is one of the most effective ways for revitalising the follicles present in hair. These hair follicles are connected to nails, and on rubbing, they get activated and result in the growth of hair.

Who should avoid Balayam Practice?

People with high blood pressure should not practice balayam as it can lead to several health problems. Besides, pregnant women must not perform Balayam as it may result in high blood pressure and uterine contractions and never do balayam if you are a heart or sugar patient.

Balayam is an all-natural process and does not have any side effects. It is an effective method of yoga for minimising and controlling the hair fall and proves to be useful for hair growth. Also, unlike most exercises or asanas, you don't need a set-up to do it.

Balayam mudra should be done in addition to other scalp exercises for hair growth to obtain the best results. The success of balayam in hair regrowth and controlling hair fall is proof of its effectiveness. It is highly recommended to add this nail rubbing practice to your hair care routine.

Balayam alone cannot cure you of all the problems. Once you start this process, if you happen to be a smoker, then it would be wise to quit smoking, and also reduce the consumption of alcohol.

Another lifestyle change that could be implemented is increasing the intake of protein, iron and sulphur. In addition to this, drink lots of water as it is the best way to remove toxins from the body.

Balayam Yoga is not proved scientifically, yet a lot of people vouch and say that it is really effective for hair growth.
