Ayurveda On Happiness And Well Being
Even in the very early ages, it was known to man that the food one consumes has a direct impact not just on physical health, but also on mental disposition. In yoga and ayurveda too, the topic of food and diet has not been overlooked. Foods that supplement the practice of yoga and are very light on the body as well as mind are termed as sattvic foods in the ayurveda. Though there is no mention of a strict yogic diet, and people need different type of nutrition at different ages, there are some broad guidelines laid down by yoga experts to aid the individual’s well being and practice.
The yoga masters all across the world recommend consuming sattvic food items. It is said to help the practice itself and also makes one more stable physically as well as mentally. Sattvic food includes all fruits, vegetables(except onion and garlic), whole grains like wheat and oats, milk and other dairy products, and other naturally harvested items like honey and herbs.
Say no to meat:
Consumption of meat, fish, and even eggs is not allowed in a yogic diet. Though meat is a great source of protein, it also contains many other toxic substances like uric acid besides high amount of cholesterol. Ayurveda recommends a pure vegetarian diet and recommends consumption of nuts, lentils, leafy green products and dairy products for daily protein needs.
Stress on seasonal food:
In the long evolutionary process, our body has learned to depend on seasonally available food for nutrition. Ayurveda recommends the same. Go to your local market and purchase seasonal and fresh food instead of buying packaged and frozen items. Do not eat very spicy, salty or sour items either.
No more toxins and chemicals:
For a healthy and happy living, ayurveda strongly suggests refraining from the use of chemicals and other intoxicants. Do not consume alcohol, tobacco and other stimulating agents. Almost all packaged items are loaded with preservatives and chemicals which should be avoided too.
Fasting at regular intervals:
To get rid of toxins in your body, it is advisable to fast at least once in a month. Do not consume anything other than water or fruit juices during this time.
In addition to the above mentioned points, try to eat at regular intervals. These practices, when implemented, will lead to physical as well as mental well being.
