Ashwagandha and Liver
The liver is a crucial metabolic organ. It is the primary detox organ in your body. No wonder you should protect your liver and treat any issue related to it in time because if the damage becomes irreversible, it affects the entire body.
Liver damage is caused due to extended use and higher doses of drugs, exposure to some toxins, chemicals or infectious factors. But don’t you worry, since the solution is simple and effective. Ayurvedic herbs such as Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) have free radical hunting action, therefore, it is enough to prevent and treat any liver injury.
Ashwagandha is one of the sturdiest herbs in Ayurvedic healing and has been used since time immemorial for an extensive range of disorders, and is most well-known for its healing benefits. Believe it or not but the positive effects of Ashwagandha is almost uncanny!
In Sanskrit Ashwagandha means “the smell of a horse,” specifying that the herb transmits the stamina and strength of a horse, and has conventionally been prescribed to help people reinforce their immune system after an illness.
Ashwagandha or winter cherry is usually referred to as “Indian ginseng” because of its revitalize properties, even though botanically, ginseng and Ashwagandha are unrelated.
What is the function of the liver?
The liver processes the food you eat, the liquid you drink, the air you breathe, and the beauty mixtures you apply on your skin and helps give energy for your body. It distinguishes harmful matter, either processing or removing them helps in blood clotting, when needed, and balances hormones.
Any disease or damage to the liver influences the physical functions directly. If not treated on time, a liver disorder may lead to the development of scar tissues, which can affect liver performance and result in fibrosis. If the fibrosis is moderate, the liver can function and resolve on its own. However, the fibrosis gets worse, and the damaged tissue may become cirrhotic. After this point, the liver impairment cannot be changed.
How does Ashwagandha help in treating the fatty liver?
Ashwagandha prevents non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by abolishing risk factors like high triglyceride and cholesterol levels, obesity, PCOS and diabetes. This antioxidant prevents and overrides liver injury from free radicals created by toxins like carbendazim and drugs like gentamicin and paracetamol. It also enhances liver function by balancing thyroid hormones.
Can Ashwagandha help the liver prevent damages caused by antibiotics?
Yes! Let’s take the example of the medicine gentamicin which is an antibiotic that creates free radicals in the body that triggers a harmful chain reaction. A study has confirmed that Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera root extract) is very helpful in preventing the damages caused by the free radical.
Other uses of Ashwagandha
- Prevents free radical injury
- Safeguards against noxious chemicals
- Prevents non-alcoholic fatty liver disorders
- Reinstates natural antioxidant levels
- Stabilizes the thyroid hormones
