As quoted by William Shakespeare- “ The eyes are the window to your soul". Our eyes are one of the most delicate organs in the body. They are at constant work from when we wake up till we go to bed. They are responsible for taking in tons of information about everything seen. Taking utmost care of these delicate visual organs is extremely important for us to perceive the world clearer.

Our eyes have a tear film. This tear film is made of an oily, watery and mucus layer. This film spreads over the eyes when you blink, keeping the eyes' surface moisturised, lubricated, clear and smooth. The absence of either causes a condition called Dry Eyes

Dry eyes disease is a common condition when your tears cannot dispense adequate lubrication for your eyes. Tears can be inadequate for many reasons. Dry eyes happen when any of the three layers are disproportionate. This tear instability can lead to inflammation and damage the eye's surface.

What causes dry eyes?

Dry eyes are caused by various reasons that disrupt the healthy tear film. Your tear film has three layers: fatty oils, aqueous fluid and mucus. The combination of three typically keeps the surface of your eyes lubricated and smooth. An issue with any of these layers can cause dry eyes.

Many reasons for tear film dysfunction include hormone changes, autoimmune disease, inflamed eyelid glands, or allergic eye disease.

  • Hormonal changes and many commonly prescribed medications also decreased tear production.
  • Being in the smoke, wind or an arid climate
  • Prolonged screen time, reading and other activities on gadgets reduce blinking
  • Patients who use glaucoma eye drops may also suffer from dry eyes.
  • If you've undergone Lasik or cataract surgeries, you may experience dry eyes. This is, however, temporary.
  • Using contact lenses for a long time.

What are the symptoms of dry eyes?

  • A burning sensation, a feeling of dryness, grittiness, and soreness in the eyes.
  • Feel sand-like texture in the eyes.
  • Eye sensitivity to smoke or wind.
  • Red eyes.
  • Inability to cry.
  • Stringy mucus discharge.
  • Keeping eyes open becomes difficult
  • Blurriness, especially towards the end of the day
  • Light sensitivity
  • Feeling discomfort when wearing contact lenses.

Are headaches linked to having Dry Eyes?

Dry eyes and migraines might be interlinked. Research suggests that migraine attacks may be more prolonged and more severe in people with dry eye syndrome compared to those without it.

Following are potential links between dry eyes and headaches include:

  • Genetics: Dry eye syndrome has been linked genetically to chronic pelvic pain, IBS, and fibromyalgia. A genetic component has been identified in both conditions, which tends to run in families.
  • Inflammation: Various inflammatory processes seem to be involved in causing both dry eye syndrome and migraine.

Simple ways to treat dry eyes condition

The most superficial treatment for any condition or disease is changing your lifestyle.

  • If your work demands you to use your computer for 10-12 hrs, make sure you divide this period and take a break of 10-15 mins after every hour. Keep aside every gadget during the break.
  • Heat treatment for dry eyes: Soak a cotton cloth in hot water and place it on your eyes for about 10-15 seconds. This will immediately relax your eyes after a prolonged screen time.
  • Try to blink your eyes frequently consciously. When you blink your eyes, the tear film in your eyes gets distributed evenly. This reduces the chances of dryness.
  • Include nuts and sea fish oil in your diet. The omega-three fatty acids in sea fish oil help reduce dryness.
  • Keep yourself hydrated to increase the fluid levels in your body.
  • Avoid being prey to the direct blow of the fan and air conditioner. Even while driving, turn the AC vent away from your face.
  • Use humidifiers during winters.

What drops can cure dry eyes?

Lubricating drops are recommended to use. Do not use cucumber, rose water or drops without a prescription. The use of these can do more damage than cure, and they can also cause an eye infection. In case the irritation persists, contact your eye doctor or Ophthalmologist.

Home remedies for dry eyes

  • Consume Flaxseeds: You can directly chew on flax seeds or powder them to mix as a supplement in your food.
  • Palm Oil: Use palm oil along with other oils in your cooking.
  • Chia seeds: Soak chia seeds in water until they puff up. Once puffed, you can mix them in juices or milk to consume. Chia seed pudding is another exciting option.
  • Walnuts: They are the best source of omega-three and are advised to consume. Include one-two walnuts in your breakfast every day.
  • Sleep well: A good night's sleep is crucial for your eye muscles to relax. Try and sleep for 7-8 hours and bid your gadget adieu thirty minutes before bedtime.
  • Wash your eyelids regularly: Gently rinse your eyelids in regular intervals of time, especially if your schedule demands you to travel around all day.

Following are some procedures that can help cure Dry eyes, medically.

  • Unblocking oil glands.  Blocked oil glands can be cleared up by using a warm compress. A thermal pulsation device is another way to unclog the oil glands.
  • Use light therapy and eyelid massage. A technique called intense-pulsed light therapy followed by a massage of the eyelids has proven to help people with severe dry eyes.
  • Use special contact lenses. Consult your doctor about newer contact lenses designed to help you with dry eyes.
