A cough is a sudden, and often repetitively reflex action that clears the significant breathing passages from fluids, irritants and microbes. The cough reflex occurs with three phases: an inhalation, a forced exhalation against a closed glottis, and a violent release of air from the lungs. The vapour follows the opening of the glottis,  which is usually accompanied by a distinctive sound.

There are two types of cough: productive and nonproductive. A productive cough produces phlegm or mucus, clearing it from the lungs. A nonproductive cough, also known as a dry cough, doesn’t produce phlegm or mucus.
