Hair is often regarded as the crowning glory of one’s personality. Poets and writers have written paeans on beautiful tresses and have romanticized it. Hair no doubt is an integral part of our personality and influences the way we look. And then comes the dreadful phenomenon of hair loss. Be it a male or a female, hair loss is one thing which both the sexes abhor. In fact there are several cases where the people loss their confidence level with the loss of hair. And it is at this juncture that hair transplant becomes a simple and viable solution to all your woes.

To begin with, hair transplantation is a surgical procedure wherein the healthy hair follicles from the donor area is transplanted to the balding area of the scalp. Usually the donor area is the back area of the head, as it is genetically resistant to balding. This process of hair removal and grafting it on the balding area can be done in two ways:

  1. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

  2. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Follicular unit extraction is also known as follicular transfer is a procedure in which individual follicular units are extracted directly from the patient’s donor area. This method was successfully conducted for the first time in 1989. Today the FUE technology has given way to Advanced FUE. What makes Advanced FUE different from the traditional FUE is that it enables the creation of larger donor pools. This it does by harvesting hair follicles from areas like the chest, arma, legs, beard etc. Another thing which differentiates traditional FUE from advanced FUE is that the later address the fact hair usually grows in curved trajectories. This way the damage which was caused to the follicles in the traditional FUE method, during excision and retrieval of the grafts is taken care of.

Moving on to Follicular Unit Transplantation/ FUT – it is a hair transplant procedure which is advised in cases wherein a major part of the patient’s scalp needs grafting. These days FUT is given preference over FUE due to the following reasons:

  1. Boosts hair transplant growth – Typically follicular units are distinct anatomic and physiologic entity. Its preservation during the graft dissection is known to maximize growth. And this is what you get from follicular unit transplant process.
  2. Less trauma to the scalp – As compared to the FUE method, the amount of trauma which the scalp undergoes is quite less. This is good not only for the patient as the recovery period is quicker, but this is also the key to a natural looking hair transplant.
  3. Enables large hair transplant sessions – This is one major reason why FUT is the most preferred hair transplant procedure. It allows the surgeon to transplant large number of grafts in each session. This way the number of incisions made in the donor area can be brought down. Also by extracting large number of grafts, the patient gets a soft frontal hairline and enough 3-4 hair grafts to get the fullest possible look.

According to experts, if you are looking for hair transplant for a major area on your scalp then you should go for Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). But in cases wherein the transplant is just for the small areas on the scalp Follicular Unit Extraction is recommended.

Now you do not have to dread hair loss or baldness as with hair transplant you can get back your natural hairs and gain back your lost confidence.
