Sleep Study or Polysomnography
Polysomnography is also known as sleep study. It is a test which is used to diagnose sleep disorders. Polysomnography registers your brain waves, the level of oxygen in your blood, heart rate and breathing. They also record eye and leg movements during the study.
How It Works?
If your doctor suggests you to go through a sleep study or polysomnography, you may be questioning what is involved in this test and what to believe. Sleep studies help doctors to identify the sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disorder, restless legs syndrome, insomnia, and nighttime behaviors like sleepwalking and REM sleep behavior disorder. Usually these disorders cannot be detected with a normal office visit—your doctor needs to collect more conclusive signs / data while you are asleep.
A sleep study is a non-interfering, overnight exam that permits doctors to observe you while you sleep to see what's happening in your brain and body. For this test, you will have to go to a sleep lab that is set up for overnight stays. It is set usually in a hospital or sleep center. While you sleep, an EEG watches your sleep stages and the cycles of REM and nonREM or NREM sleep you go through over the night, to distinguish possible disruptions in the pattern of your sleep. A sleep study will also evaluate things such as eye movements, body movements, heart and breathing rates, snoring and oxygen levels in your blood (through a sensor).
A sleep study is performed in a room that is made to be comfortable and dim for sleeping. You will be asked to reach roughly two hours before bedtime. You can carry personal items associated to sleep, and you can sleep comfortably in your own pajamas. Before you are moved to bed in the exam room, a technologist will set sensors, or electrodes, on your head and body, but you will still have lot of room to move and get comfy. Polysomnographic technologists observe you throughout the night and can help you if you need to use the bathroom. Many people wonder that how will they be able to sleep under those conditions. However a full night of sleep is not required to get useful information from your sleep study.
The information from your sleep study will generally be taken by a technologist, and later assessed by your doctor. This may take up to 2 weeks, when you will plan a follow up to discuss the results.
