Sinus or Sinusitis is a condition that causes severe headaches, face pain, and nose blocks. When the empty spaces called sinuses within the face bone flame up, they cause headaches, nasal congestion, eye pain, fatigue, etc.  Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses. It is often caused by bacterial (germ) infection.

Known as pinas in Ayurveda, sinusitis is a condition in which the sinuses are blocked with mucus and become inflamed. Sinusitis may attack people of any age and sex. Kids suffering from cold and other viral infections are prone to Sinusitis, and so are Asthma patients.

Sinus issues are caused by an underlying imbalance in Prana Vata (the sub dosha of Vata that governs the brain, head, and the mind) and Shleshaka Kapha (a sub dosha of Kapha, which governs lubrication and moisture balance).

When these two sub-doshas are simultaneously imbalanced, another complication arises. Ama, the sticky waste-product of digestion, gets mixed with Shleshaka Kapha in the sinus area, forming an even more toxic, sticky mucus called Shleshma. Shleshma settles in the area and clogs the channels of the sinuses. Due to the restriction and blocking, Pitta dosha also becomes imbalanced.

When all three doshas are out of balance, immunity is severely compromised. The body becomes a fertile ground for microbes, allergens, or viruses. Air pollution, stress, fluctuations of hot and cold weather, and lifestyle patterns such as eating excessive amounts of cold, sweet, heavy foods, staying up too late, or not getting enough exercise can aggravate the imbalance.

Ayurvedic treatment of sinusitis involves liquefying and expelling aggravated body energies with the use of certain Ayurvedic herbs and diet as well as nasal therapies and applications. The Panchakarma treatment of Nasya is quite effective in dealing with sinusitis.

Ayurvedic tips for Sinus-

  • Avoid very hot or cold food items

  • Do not smoke and reduce exposure to air pollutants

  • Frequent head baths trigger sinuses

  • Pick a Kapha pacifying diet, avoiding excessively cold, oily or salty foods

  • Khichdi/Pongal is good for treating Sinuses

  • Avoid a sedentary lifestyle and don’t skip or delay your meals.

Sinusitis Ayurvedic Home Remedies-

  • Boil some tulsi leaves in water and use this for steaming. Inhaling tulsi vapors brings relief to sinus headaches.

  • Alternatively, you can add mint or eucalyptus to your water and steam twice a day as well.

  • Inhale turmeric fumes by burning it on a piece of cotton

  • Crush a few buds of garlic and tie it to a piece of cloth. You can inhale this cloth by keeping it close to your nose for relief.

  • Prepare a paste using cinnamon powder and warm water. Apply this paste onto your forehead and nose to get relief from nasal congestion and headache.

  • Drink up some lemon honey juice or orange juice with warm water.

  • Damp a cloth by dipping it in hot water and place it on the face ensuring that it doesn’t cause any burns.

  • Make a decoction of ginger and honey or ginger and tulsi in warm water and drink it every day.

Sinusitis ayurvedic remedies (DIY)-

  • Boil 1 to 2 liters of water and add a few drops of clove oil (or a large spoonful of cloves), 10-12 crushed mint leaves, and a few drops of eucalyptus oil (or 1/3 cup of eucalyptus leaves). Inhale the steam for 10-15 minutes. Continue this twice a day until congestion clears and then once a week to clear the phlegm that gets deposited in the sinuses.

  • Have 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger juice with 1 teaspoon of honey in it twice a day.

  • Crush 4-5 peeled garlic buds and inhale the fragrance. This will reduce nasal congestion.

  • Mix 1 tsp of crushed garlic and 1 tsp of turmeric with 2 tbsp of honey. Take 1 tsp daily.

Along with these Ayurvedic tips, practice some simple everyday yoga-like Pranayama and Kapal Bhati to improve breathing and to maintain good oxygen levels in the lungs. Also, try to meditate for at least 10 minutes.
