What are the Side-Effects of Bitter gourd?
1.Can Increase Risk of Miscarriage
Women carrying a baby in her womb should be particular and care full of her eating habits such as, eating or drinking as it can have a serious effect on the child’s health. A pregnant woman eating bitter gourds in extravagant quantity can be unhealthy because of their ability to increase the menstrual flow and cause aborticide effect. In addition,bitter gourd increase the risk of miscarriage and provoke trigger contractions. It is better to consume bitter gourds in less quantity as there is no scientific reason to show that bitter gourd is unhealthy for nursing mothers.
2. Increased Risk of Favism
Bitter gourd is not healthy for a person suffering from deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase because the seeds present in it worsens the condition and arise favism which leads to abdominal pain, fever, anemia and headache and it can also lead a person to vegetative state.
3. Can Cause Hypoglycemic Coma
A person suffering from diabetes should consult a doctor before adding bitter gourd in his/her diet because diabetes and bitter gourd together can bring down the blood pressure level to a very low level which is dangerous for a person.
4. Can Cause Irregular Heart Beat
Bitter gourd is good for our heart as it helps in regulating blood pressure and in preventing clogging of arteries. A study revealed that a 22 yr old man drank half cup of bitter gourd juice and found that he saw symptoms of an irregular heartbeat. The young man said that he had no heart problem earlier. The formation of blood cloths leads to the irregular heartbeat because of the combining of blood in one side of the heart which may later cause heart attack or stroke.
5. Can Cause Abdominal Pain, Vomiting, and Diarrhea In Some Children
Due to the bitter taste and its rough texture in the bitter gourd children don’t like it. Most parents ensure that their kids eat the bitter gourd in order to provide them with all the health benefits. As per a study, it has been found that the covering of red arils on the bitter gourd seeds could be harmful to some children and cause diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Hence, bitter gourds should be avoided if your child is allergic to it.

Eating bitter gourd during pregnancy is unsafe. Bitter gourds consists of certain chemicals that may cause menstrual bleeding.
Doctors suggest that bitter gourd should be avoided during breast feeding however there is no proper reason.
Bitter gourd is known to help lowing blood sugar levels. It may also lower your blood sugar levels to lower than normal when you eat this fruit-vegetable during medication. Watch out your sugar levels if you feel low in energy or dizzy.
Bitter gourd may interrupt with blood sugar control after or during surgery. It is suggested to stopping bitter gourds before two weeks of surgery.
