Healthy teeth are clean and do not have cavities. Healthy gums are firm and pink. Follow these steps to maintain healthy gums and teeth:

Floss at least once a day. It is always good to floss prior to brushing. Flossing removes plaque from between the gums and on the teeth.

Brush 2 minutes each time. Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Using fluoride toothpaste is a good option, as the fluoride helps prevent tooth decay and strengthen tooth enamel.

A worn-out toothbrush will not clean your teeth properly. Do not forget to change your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if required.

You are less likely to get gum disorders if you eat healthy food. Eat a healthy diet.

Eating and drinking a lot of sweets adds to your risk of cavities. Brush your teeth soon after, if you do eat or drink sweets. Avoid sweetened drinks and sweets.

Smokers have more gum and teeth complications than non-smokers. Do not smoke.

Keep retainers, dentures and other gadgets clean. This involves brushing them frequently. A cleansing solution can be used to soak them.

Many dentists suggest having the teeth professionally cleaned every six months. Plan consistent checkups with your dentist.

Plaque may develop even with careful flossing and brushing. Regular teeth cleaning by a dentist removes plaque.

This is very crucial for getting at areas that are hard to reach on your own. Professional cleaning involves scaling and then polishing the teeth. In this method devices are used to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth. X-rays may be included in the routine examination. Your dentist can detect complications early, so they do not become more expensive and serious to fix.

Ask your dentist:

How to brush your teeth well and what kind of toothbrush you should use.

Electric tooth brushes have been shown to clean teeth better than manual toothbrushes, so ask your dentist if an electric tooth brush is right for you.

Over improper and vigorous flossing may damage the gums. Ask your dentist the right and proper way to floss your teeth.

Water irrigation- Ask your dentist if you need to use any special tools or devices, such as water irrigation. This may sometimes help supplement but not replace flossing and brushing.

Ask if particular mouth rinses or toothpastes would be beneficial for you. In some cases, depending on your condition, over-the-counter pastes and rinses may be doing you more harm than good.
