How to Defeat Boredom and Make the Best of Your Life
We have all been there- bored and bored to the extent that nothing in the world seemed appealing or interesting.
Boredom is a frustrating state of being we all are familiar with. Most of us at some point of time have experienced a general apathy and disinterest in life and everything that we were doing at that moment.
Unfortunately the reason for your boredom is something only you can figure out. What works for someone else might not work for you. For instance, while reading a novel might be riveting for one person, you might be bored to tears by the very thought of it.
Despite the underlying cause, all you need to beat back boredom is a little bit of a shake up!

Life is precious and short. Simply being alive is reason enough to be happy. There is no dearth of things we can do to keep ourselves occupied and engrossed. Whether the goal is simple fun, being productive or unreservedly entertaining ourselves, there are many options to ponder.
Even the act of pondering the ways in which you can spend your time is interesting enough to pull you out of your boredom. You can make a list of all the outlandish ways you could be having fun. If nothing else, it will give you a good laugh whenever you read it.
And that is akin to you putting your foot down and saying,”I choose not to be bored and I will not be bored” and surprisingly you will find you will not be bored.
Outlandish ideas aside, let’s for a moment pause and ruminate on Earl Nightingale’s philosophies: boredom is simply the absence of good ideas.
Here are some fantastic ideas that will get you going and make you wonder what you ever had to be bored about –
Friends ahoy: Socialize with your friends. Sometimes all you need is a change of pace and place. Head out for a change of scenery. It might be just the thing to get your creative juices flowing. Grab one of your friends and catch up over coffee.Conversation about other things will give your brain a chance to relax, unwind and recharge.
It’s time to play: Play a new game that will have you laughing in no time. Try dancing to the new zumba track. Relax, laugh and enjoy the endorphin rush.
Fresh air and good cheer: Head to the park or even just your yard. The weather is great, the sky is blue and there is bright sunlight. Play a game of Frisbee or better still, pack sandwiches and go out on a picnic all by yourself.
Melody mine: It’s time to explore new music. Try out a band you have always been meaning to but never had the time. Listen to the artists your friends say are fantastic. Or better yet, randomly choose one of the chartbusters to listen to. Want to make it more interesting? Try the polar opposite genre of the music you usually listen to. You may learn to like it or at least find what others seem to like about it.
It’s your fantasy: Never have time to read a book. Here is the best opportunity. Try a new author everyone is talking about. Simply download a new e-book and immerse yourself in a new world. Better yet, go to a book store and take your time browsing through their endless collections and choose a few good books to keep you company every time you need a change.
Discover a new you: Take up a new hobby. Always wanted to explore the art of origami? Try it now. Have been postponing gardening? Your yard is calling you. Get a spade and a few seeds and get started. Take pleasure as the seeds you planted grow into beautiful plants or flowers.
Or even better, take up your old hobby which has been gathering dust these past few years and re-discover what used to make you love life.

AUM: Here is your new catch phrase. Some quiet time is not a bad thing. It might be just the thing you need to re-evaluate your choices and actions. Take the time to completely let go and meditate. Revel in the quiet time and use it to de-clutter your mind. Meditate and if your mind is too disturbed to mediate then get your body flowing with yoga.
Choose not to be bored: Challenge yourself. Step out of your comfort zone and try something you haven’t allowed your self to do. Haven’t been dancing because you’re not adept, now is the time to learn. Were you always to busy to try the new aerobics class at your gym? Here is your chance. Learn something new and make new friends at the same time.
Re-discover the city you love – When you have time to spare, it is the best time to take a leisurely stroll, check out the new architecture, take a tour of the museum, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee as you explore the city you love so much.
Get creative with your wish list – Make a list of all the places you’d like to visit and things you would like to do on your vacation days.
Is it a tour of Taj Mahal orscuba diving in the Andamans? Or would you like to visits Ayers rock in Australia, the sandy beaches of Mauritius, the pomp and splendour of Universal Studios? Whatever your dream vacation having a plan helps.
So make a comprehensive list of where you’d like to go and what you’d like to do. And one day you may be surprised when you’ve checked out all the places on your list. ?
Let your creativity shine: Explore your innate creativity. Do you like to draw, paint, make Paper Mache art? Now is the time to go all out. Take the time to redecorate your space with your own creations. The next time you are bored look at them and realize you did something good with your time.
Fengshui your life: Are your closets bulging with clothes you neither use nor need? Are all the toys you still used as a child gathering dust in your cupboards? Take the time to clean out your closets and desks. There are loads of people who would love to have what you don’t want. Donate your items to charity and make someone happy.
A shade of happiness: Do you have infinite photos of your previous vacations and family gatherings? Look through them and remember your good times. Organize them, tag them and maybe make an album complete with background music. It can be something you share with your friends and family at the next gathering and spread the joy.
A touch of joy, a dash of laughter and whole lot of zest: Learn to cook your favorite dish. If you already know that, find a new favorite dish. Cooking is relaxing, fun and enjoyable and a good way to surprise yourself and your family.
Be Commander Wonderful: That will be your super hero name when you use your valuable skills to mentor or teach someone who cannot otherwise afford a tutor. Put your hard earned skills to good use as you help someone less achieve the full potential. There is nothing as uplifting as making someone else happy.
TED talks and you can listen: TED talks are amazing videos where in exceptional people all over the world give their take on life. You can listen to a multitude of people from various walks of life, talk about their dreams, passions and challenges and how they succeed. If you are looking for inspiration you simply cannot do better. Watching and listening to some of their lives and their accomplishments despite their struggles will give you a new meaning to why life is so precious and there is no time to waste being bored.
People inherently don’t want to be bored. We as a species are hard wired to be doing something. When we stop, we get the feeling “I am bored”. Hopefully the above few ideas will help you realize how not to be bored.
