Hiccups-how do they occur
Hiccups are sudden, automatic compressions of the stomach (diaphragm) which happen in the similar time as a constriction of the voice box (larynx) and entire closing of the glottis, successfully blocking air consumption. The glottis is the center portion of the larynx, where the vocal cords are found.
SDF (synchronous diaphragmatic flutter) or singultus is the medical term used for Hiccups, also called hiccoughs.
Often there is no particular reason that the hiccups occur. It's normal to get an episode of hiccups from time to time and there is no requirements for alert should you get one. In lot of cases, hiccups resolve with no treatment in a couple of minutes.
Hiccups can happen separately or at a stretch and it generally occurs in a rhythm, which means that the interim between each hiccup is generally steady. Many people observe them to be a minor irritation. But in case the hiccups continue for a very long time then one may require treatment as it may become a grave medical problem. Women are more affected by hiccups than men if the hiccups continue for a long time. The term intractable is used if the attack of hiccups persists for more than a month.
The most widely recognized triggers for hiccups that last less than 48 hours include:
Drinking aerated drinks
Consumption of too much alcohol
Emotional stress or excitement
Sudden change in temperature
If air is swallowed while sucking a candy or gum
A variety of factors may be responsible if hiccups persist for more than forty eight hours and are commonly grouped under the following group.
Nerve damage or irritation
The most widely recognized reason for continues hiccups is harm to or aggravation of the vagus nerves or phrenic nerves, which serve the stomach muscle. Factors that may bring about harm or bothering to these nerves are:
A goiter in the neck, tumor or cyst
A foreign body or hair in the ear touching the eardrum
Laryngitis or sore throat
Central nervous system disorders
Your body's normal control of the hiccup reflex maybe disrupted due to trauma to the central nervous system or damage to the central nervous system due to a tumor or an infection.
Traumatic brain injury
Drugs and Metabolic disorders
Continues hiccups can be provoked by:
Women are less prone to develop a long term hiccup which is mostly seen in men. Some other elements due to which the risk of hiccups increases is
Emotional or mental Stress: Some cases of short or long term hiccups may be connected with excitement stress, anxiety
Surgery: Also if a person undergoes a procedure that includes abdominal organs under general anesthesia he may develop hiccups .

Your doctor may perform some neurological test to determine a couple of factors and will recommend other tests to get into the depth of the cause if required.
In most of the cases hiccups leave on their own. If any of the primary medical condition is the cause of your hiccups, treatment of that illness may remove the hiccups. The doctor will decide on the treatments accordingly if hiccups have lasted for more than two days.
